Event Details

Dear Members and Friends of SwissCham,

SwissCham Beijing is delighted to invite you to discover the oeuvre of iconic American artist Cindy Sherman at the Espace Louis Vuitton on January 14, 2022. With a selection of drinks and finger food, it is a good chance to admire the art show while gathering with art collectors and art lovers.

The works selected for this show all belong to the Collection and are presented here within the framework of the Fondation Louis Vuitton "Hors-les-murs" programme. Carrying out the Fondation's mission to make its activites available to a broader international public, this programme unfolds at the Espaces Louis Vuitton in Tokyo, Munich, Venice, Beijing, Seoul and Osaka.

A mysterious icon, Cindy Sherman undergoes a metamorphosis with each of her masked portraits. She might portray herself as a young Hollywood cinema star (Untitled Film Stills, 1977-1980; Rear Screen Projections,1980), a historical figure in the work of an old master (History Portraits, 1989-1990), a clown (Clown, 2003-2004), or a man (Men, 2019-2020). Often turning her eyes to the viewer as she poses for her camera, Sherman invites us to join her in a quest for her identity. In a cross between reality and fantasy, her portraits interweave free expression and dreams, developing over the course of her career from the beauty and timelessness of black-and-white to the vibrancy of colour. From the beginning, she established a protocol that still remains unchanged today: she turns the camera on herself, showcasing her talents as an actress, costume designer, model, technician, lighting engineer, special effects coordinator, props person, photo retoucher and all-around artist.

We are looking forward to meeting you at this art exhibition.

With best regards,

Your SwissCham Team

    Cindy Sherman

Born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey (USA) in 1954, Cindy Sherman lives and works in New York City (USA). She studied photography at Buffalo State College (New York, USA) in 1972 alongside renowned artists Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince and Louise Lawler.

She executed her first series, Untitled Films Stills, between 1977 and 1981, posing as female characters of the film noir and B movie genres. Beginning in the 1980s, she released several series, including Centerfolds (1981), 12 horizontal photos that were commissioned and eventually rejected by Artforum. This is when the artist began to address the most vulnerable and ambiguous sides of her personality through the use of humour and the grotesque. In the series Fairy Tales (1985), she presents herself as a monster, introducing prosthetics and mannequins; in Sex Pictures (1992-1996), her exploration of the macabre side of sexuality reveals a surrealist influence. In the 2000s, she began to use digital technology to retouch her portraits, miming the poses of extravagant women from the United States’ East and West coasts in Head shots (2000-2002) or those of mature upper-class women in Society Portraits (2008). Among her latest series, Flappers (2016) examines the ageing process of 1920s Hollywood starlets. In 2017, she began to use Instagram and various face-altering applications to transform her appearance into that of a man (Men, 2019-2020).

Her work has appeared in a number of international exhibitions, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (USA) in 1997; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (USA), the Serpentine Gallery, London (United Kingdom), and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh (United Kingdom) in 2003; the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris (France) in 2006; and the Kunsthaus Bregenz (Austria), the Louisiana Museum for Modern Art, Humlebaek (Denmark), and the Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin (Germany) in 2006-07. More recently, retrospectives of her work have been featured at the Museum of Modern Art of New York City (USA) and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (USA) in 2012; the Broad Museum of Los Angeles (USA) in 2016; the National Portrait Gallery of London (United Kingdom) and the Vancouver Art Gallery (Canada) in 2019.
